Extra XOs

Postby alchymyst » Sun Mar 30, 2008 3:34 pm

I participated in G1G1 with the intent of sending the five I received to a school in the Philippines. Unfortunately the location does not have WI-FI available.

I would like to donate the five machines that I have to some organization that could use them. Does any one have any suggestions?

Does the school you wanted to help out have a wired network? In that case how about still sending the five laptops to them, but add a usb to ethernet adapter into the bundle so one of the XOs can get network access, which should hopefully allow the rest to connect via that wired-in one. (or buy five adapters and have them wired in individually if that works better)

Adapters are not that expensive, $25 for one type:

(I'm not affiliated with the place, but the owner is an XO owner and forum member at XO News)

Of course the biggest thing about the XO is the collaborative features from the mesh networking, so even if they are in their own mesh network with no outside access they'd still be usefull to the school, I would think.

Have Fun,

Hi,
I am responsible of the Belgian organization "Anthony Charity" ("Oeuvre des pains" in French)
We have a school project in U.P., India. We have 9 XOs at the moment and are still trying to get some more. It is not easy to teach with 9 XOs for a class of 40 children !
We have an address in the USA from where we send the XOs to India.
You can see here our demand relayed by olpcnews :

We also have a website : http://www.AnthonyCharity.org (http://www.OeuvreDesPains.org)
I can send to you some more informations with pictures.
Feel free to contact me : mvalentin AT oeuvredespains.org

Hello alchymyst.
I was wondering if you still had any XOs to donate. My organizations would love to have them. We work out of The Gambia, West Africa. They students here are working hard to increase their access to information and improve their international test scores, but as you can imagine in the smallest country on continental Africa, it is a monumental task. You can check out our websites and if you are interested in donating, we would be forever grateful:

Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately for you, I was contacted by a group in India who were able to use them. I hope you are able to find another source.

Well thanks anyway...such is the struggles and success of small non-profits! We'll keep looking and if you hear of anything, please do let us know.
Peace, shaye
