I have upgraded my existing XO to build 767. Will the laptops in this year's G1G1 program be essentially identical with regard to hardware and software?

the hardware is identical.

the first laptops being shipped where built using 703 (8.1), so they don't have the new user interface. This is because the manufacturing of some units took place before 8.2 was released. As soon as 767 (8.2) was released then manufacturing switched to using that.

G1G1 stands for "Give one, get one" in the context of donations of laptops to children in developing countries.
