Yep, there should be some info regarding what works best where on the wiki(webkins and nickolodeon(sp) come to mind).

I am also a 1st day donor in the G1G0 program. I too will wait for the little guy to get here. (I'm stubborn.) I've just got off the phone with the help desk, currently, they are still working through a claim and best guess is that the claim will resolve sometime in mid-April. So I'll wait until then to call again.

Originally the XO was supposed to be an X-Mas gift for the G'Kids, now it's going to be a birthday gift for me. The G'Kids will get a used HP ZD7010. (Can only hold off X-Mas so long.)

A brief chronology of my order:
11/12/07 - Donated/Ordered online
11/12/07 - Received confirmation email from PayPal
11/15/07 - Received Thank You email from OLPC
11/??/07 - Received "You should have it by 12/24" email.
12/20/07 - Sent email to obtain shipping information
01/04/08 - Tracking site/FedEx indicated XO was out for delivery...Problem: Was being delivered to Washougal, WA, whereas I live approximately 2,600 miles SE of there in Abingdon, VA.
01/04/04 - Sent email to inform OLPC that they were delivering to the wrong address.
01/04/08 - Received automated reply to mine of 01/04/08 stating delivery no later than 1/15/08
01/06/08 - Received automated email letting me know the XO had shipped. (See 01/04/08)
01/15/08 - Received reply to mine of 01/04/08, letting me know that the order had been delivered.
01/16/08 - Sent email clarifying the difference between the West and East coast of the US as it pertains to delivery.
01/16/08 - Received automated reply to mine of 01/16/08
01/24/08 - Received second automated reply to mine of 01/16/08
02/08/08 - Called, explained the problem, supervisor to call back in 3-5 business days.
02/19/08 - Called, explained the problem, supervisor to call back that afternoon.
02/22/08 - Called, (Cynthia), explained the problem, supervisor to call..., explained the supervisor hasn't returned either of the previous two calls so wasn't expecting to get a call this time either. Cynthia put me on hold for awhile, then got back on the phone with the news that it was all taken care of and that I would get an XO she couldn't say when.
03/06/08 - Read posts on this site and others, read that it is a good idea to confirm the address is correct for delivery.
03/06/08 - Called, (Cynthia), asked for shipping information. I supplied LastName and Zip, Cynthia provided FirstName and Street address. Was told the XO had shipped in January. I informed Cynthia that I had talked to *her* on 02/22/08 and that she had supposedly fixed the problem. (There's only one Cynthia that works there.) Cynthia stated that they were still working on the claim and that I should expect to hear back/receive an XO in mid-April.

So I wait.

I'll post here in mid-April to either list another entry or possibly that I might have received the XO.

Was she able to provide any shipping info? If so, PM it to me and I'll have a look-see

Sorry about all this, I get the impression there is going to be a faction of OLPC donors that are becoming quite bald :P

backbyter,
when you call is it any quicker to get through to a live person?
hopefully with more people getting their Xo, then the phone lines would be less congested??

Mel--

Yes, it's much faster when you call now. My phone call on 3/6 only lasted 13+ minutes. IIRC, I was only on hold for about 5 mins. I made the call at 15:50 Eastern time.

Am I the most unlucky OLPC wannabe owner person in the world?
I just sent this email to help@laptop...:

"I got my laptop in January 17 2008 (Edmonton - Canada). It didn`t work, I returned it to Brightstar Recovery centre on 01/18/2008, RMA xxxxxx. 3 weeks ago I received an email saying that the new laptop had been shipped.
I waited and waited and got nothing, I just checked the tracking number I had received in March 5 2008 and it is for the Laptop delivered on 01/07/2008, are you kidding me?

Since retuning it 2 months have passed and and still don't have my OLPC, this is outrageous. I want a refund and the refund of the $29CAD I paid to return the useless OLPC I received in January.

Thanks
Daniel B

Ref: xxxx
PO xxx0"

Does a human being read these emails? This whole ordeal makes me so mad and disappointed on the whole OLPC project. I wanted to donate 100 to a village in Colombia (when it reaches $100/unit) but I gave up.
Sorry for the whining

One potential and real problem. I'm not seeing this thread until after recieving my laptop. A good idea might be to send info out about the forum to people who have ordered and are still in the queue, and even to everyone who has already gotten theirs.
It would have been nice, while I was waiting ( for three months) to be able to log on and see what some other people have been doing with theirs.

Wonder of wonders!
I just read about a way to check with FedEx using OLPC's order # -- and the laptop is on the way!

I know I said I'd give an update in mid April, but this post hasn't been updated since March so I don't feel too bad.

04/07/08 - Called, (Elsa) explained the problem, "fedex person" to call back.
04/08/08 - Called, explained the problem, told the order was in the pipeline.
05/08/08 - Called, explained the problem, told the order was still in process, supervisor to call
05/09/08 - Left voice mail - never returned.
05/27/08 - Called, explained the problem, told to email help@laptop.org as "they" are taking over all outstanding issues.
05/27/08 - Sent email with copy of this chronology and ref#, rcpt# contact info, etc.

6+ months and counting...

My experience was different and very disappointing:

I called and ordered a G1G1 laptop on approximately November 12th, and was given a confirmation number 201281672, to give to my children and do something good as well. I waited and it did not arrive at Christmas, so I emailed and was told January, then emailed again and was told 1st quarter 2008, and now I have been told that that number never existed, they think their contractors messed up, and since they never charged my credit card, we are simply out of luck and will not get a laptop: the G1G1 offer is over.

You may say, perhaps I am trying to game the system to get a laptop, or that I should have known when the charge wasn't made to the Visa card; but I really did call and order and I did not know anything, just the useless number they gave me; and the emails I sent with that number never raised the issue.

I am so disappointed; I took a risk to order this new thing instead of a Wintel or Mac, thinking I would give my children something neat we could share, and also help others, and that I could work through the issues of it being different and give us all something good.

Instead, we got nothing after six months of waiting and asking and trying and getting nothing but emails saying to be patient. My kids stopped asking about it around March, after I told them so many times that we were still waiting for it.

If Dr. Negroponte ever reads this, I hope he knows he has lost a good customer and proponent.
