Are Teachers Needed?

Postby kirish43 » Sat Feb 02, 2008 2:06 pm

After reading about the implementation in different countries it looks like there may be a need for OLPC to send teachers to the OLPC's schools overseas, to assist with teacher training and working with students. I would be willing to go during the summer months when I am not teaching. I can volunteer my time and skills. OLPC would only need to provide transport to get me there and a place to stay, while I was there working- perhaps a host family or something like that. I am betting that we could find many teachers here in the US that have successfully used technology in the classroom who would be willing to donate 3-4 weeks of their time.

I remember taking Logo in college while I working toward my teaching certificate working in the field of Early Childhood Development. I remember the exact moment I "played " with Logo. Suddendly all that Math suff I passed in High School but had no real idea of what it ment-made sense. It was for me a life changing experience. I read everything I could about Dr. Seymour Papert In fact I have a little robot the using Logo type language to move around on the floor-and then I have my second graders program with logo. Adding a visual dimension to math makes a HUGe difference for many, many kids. That was in the 80's. I have been a teacher ever since-spending the last 10 years as an educational technology specialist. Most of my career has been teaching in a large city school district. I can assure you that the digital divide is real-access to information is critical for children to become successful.

Just a thought-something for OLPC to consider in the future

kirish43: our local church (near Washington, DC) is putting together a July month-long trip to Kenya and hope to have six OLPC XO systems go with us for Standards up through 8 in the Primary school.

Hi
I think The mesh networking with other XOs could be a killer apparatus. I could see a bunch of kids swapping items through the mesh network. I’m not totally sure about the educational effects of videos being shared behind a teacher’s back.
