For the European Portuguese version the situation is much better at 51%:

Yes, pt translation was migrated from legacy squeakland release with
bunch of translations for its supported languages. pt_BR was just
copied from POT and no one working on until now.

Looking at some of the phrases, however, I can see that this second file
should really be pt_br instead since things like "file" were translated
to "arquivo" rather than "ficheiro".

I suppose it is easy enough to just copy one file to the other and so
jump from 0% to 51% for pt_br, which is important for meeting the
Update.1 deadline.

I think how to populate translations is up to the language team. So
you could discuss with team listed in
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Pootle#Sign-up
It seems that uploading PO to Pootle doesn't work (when I tested it
Pootle stopped). so you will need to ask localization team or etoys
for help to merge translations and commit to repository.

I am not sure whether providing pt_br is really important even if
that is same as pt... You could install better translations onto XO
even after update.1 is released.

But it seems to me that any changes after that will
make the two files diverge. I am not familiar with Pootle - does it have
any kind of inheritance mechanism? The difference between pt and pt_br
would be so small that dealing with them separately means effectively
doing all the work twice.
Unfortunately Pootle doesn't have such feature at this time.

Cheers,
/Korakurider

Why do we not hear of appropriate recruitment of localizers in target
countries? Surely some of the teachers and students would be
interested in helping themselves out.

This is an issue also for Kreyòl in Haiti, where we would like to
start with standard French, and with Dari (Eastern Farsi in
Afghanistan) and other related languages. It will come up again when
dealing with related languages and dialects of India and various
African countries, and even in English (US vs UK spelling, at least).

Brazilians will tell you that it does indeed matter long term. People
from Portugal talk Portuguese funny. But they can get by in either
direction until we can fix it.

Hi Jecel and Korakurider
Paulo Drummond

[Localization] [Etoys] portuguese in pootle

Postby Juliano Bittencourt » Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:55 pm

Hello Korakurider,

I'm the current administrator for the Brazilian Portuguese inside
Pootle. Yesterday I was discussing with Paulo Drummond about the
problems happening with the Brazilian Portuguese translation of etoys.
Paulo and myself did a lot of effort in translating etoys when the
process was still happening inside launchpad. Paulo actually is
working for a long time in order to provide a portuguese version of
squeak/etoys.
Paulo explained to me, that in the past we didn't have a pt-BR
and pt-PT, only a pt translation. When the translations were uploaded
to Pootle, the original translation was only uploaded in pt-PT and not
in pt-BR folder. After the upload, lots of strings were changed in the
pt-PT version, customizing the sentences to the portuguese spoken in
Portugal. What I was trying to do was to find a po file previous to
these customizations, in order to avoid redoing work already done.
I will check the files today and do the necessary consistency
work.
I also suggest, that our discussion regarding translation also
happens inside the localization list, since we have some volunteers in
translation that only participate on that list.

Best,

Juliano

Hi, Juliano.
Thanks for explanation, that cleared up much of my concerns.

If you feel current translations for PT-BR on Pootle (based on old
POT though) OK,
please push it to git as a first version, so that admin work can be
done, including synchronization to the latest POT , clean up PO
header, and etoys to test pulling it to build.

BTW, now that PT-BR has been forked from PT, are you taking care of PT-PT also?

Cheers,
/Korakurider
