[Grassroots-l] local groups for XO/OLPC

Postby Sameer Verma » Mon Dec 24, 2007 4:19 pm

I think its important for new owners of XO laptops and OLPC enthusiasts
to discover each other and gain critical mass in their own local
communities. Currently, we have to rely on discovering others by
accident (some post on some list) or by other proxies such as Linux User
Groups in different cities. Is anyone working on a directory of sorts to
group people by geography?

On a related note, we (SF State University, San Francisco, CA USA) are
gathering our campus folk together on an internal list so that we can
organize meetings on campus about OLPC and XOs. We have space and
interest. Anyone from San Francisco or the SF Bay Area is welcome to
join. Simply drop me a note.

Were you aware of the Google Maps register?

It is a self-maintained map.

You will need to register with Google and log-in.
Once you do that, you'll see an EDIT button on the page which allows you to add a pin.

Amateur Radio already has a global laptop tracking system all linked to google maps. Your laptop just has to send out its position report whenever it is in range of wireless access.

We are just now proposing to open this to XO laptops and specifically amateur radio operators with XO laptops. See the web page:

http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/APRS-OLPC.html

I just heard about and just now joined this Grasroots forum. If my post is ill-informed or not on the right track, I apologize in advance. Otherwise I hope one of the APRS authors using Linux will whip out this application soon.
