USB Serial Adapter

Postby phiggins » Tue Jan 22, 2008 7:38 am

I'm having trouble getting a USB to Serial adapter working. I tried two that I had and they didn't work so I went and bought a new one (Dynex (Best Buy private label) DX-UBDB9) that was recommended as on that works with the XO.

and it didn't work either. When I run a program that is suppose to let me choose a serial adapter to use, nothing shows up in the list.

Here are some diagnostics:

1. Cleared dmesg then plugged in the adapter and did a dmesg:
[ 1053.618277] hub_port_wait_reset: portstatus=501 portchange=10
[ 1053.677768] hub_port_wait_reset: portstatus=100 portchange=1

[ 1054.158347] PM: Adding info for No Bus:usbdev2.3_ep83

then did a ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0:
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 0 Jan 22 06:04 /dev/ttyUSB0

Any suggestions as what may be wrong?

Thanks

I found my problem. The program I'm using Navgator Mariner is written in Java and I had to create this file:
home/olpc/Mariner/jre/linux/lib/ext/gnu.io.rxtx.properties
then put this statement in it:
gnu.io.rxtx.SerialPorts=/dev/ttyUSB0:/dev/ttyUSB1:

Paul,

I'm glad you got the USB adapter working. I'm the person that recommended it on the wiki. Funny thing, the application I needed it for is also a Java app and requires rxtx.

Sirs,
I received my OLPC yesterday.
The unit appears to function in all areas except:
The 3 USB ports do not appear to work. 3 different USB sitcks were use in all 3 USB ports and none
showed up on the Journal bottom of the page menu.
The SD slot did mount and read the 256mg card and the icon appeared on the Journal bar as described in
"getting started".
Is this a hardware problem that will require an RMA?
Please advise if this is the correct forum.
thanks

Just a thought. Try another USB device to check the ports (something like a usb mouse or keyboard). There might be a reason your usb drives aren't showing up in the journal (more like explanation). Tom

Thanks for the help,
I discovered the USB was write protected.
Once un-protected it works. however the 2 others still do not work
I have read of other mount problems with specific brands of USB stick and
needing to be FAT32 formated on other threads.
