Fix Clock issue -- don't see OK prompt when using screen

I have an XO-1 that I believe has the Fix Clock issue. The power light and battery light are on but the display is not on and I don't hear a start-up sound. The battery holder is not defective nor do I see leakage. I have replaced the battery and let it charge for over a day (the AC cable is plugged in).

I've connected a serial adapter to J1 on the XO and to my Mac. I can see the device in the Mac Systems Profiler and in the /dev folder: tty.usbserial-A4008swh

I can connect to the XO in Terminal: screen /dev/tty.usbserial-A6008ShI 115200.

However, when I turn on the XO, I see garbage characters in the Terminal, not the OK prompt:

jodys-macbook-pro:~ Jody$ screen /dev/tty.usbserial-A4008swh 115200

Any ideas where I should go from here?

The XO is responding -- you are just not receiving all the info.

First, what serial adapter are you using ? A 3.3 volt version is required --- not 5 volt version. The 5 volt version will give the results you see -- it misses bits in the bytes. If you have a 3.3 volt version, then check parity and number of stop bits, but these are unlikely causes.
