Note: I am not an employee, just a volunteer. From what I understand, however, the telephone number for hardware replacements is a seperate company (the one that did the actual manufacturing). There is undoubtedly a lot of discussion going on as to how to exactly handle all of the issues coming in a timely and effective manner, so hang in there.

As Walter, the president for software and content of OLPC, said: ".. I was the very first person to order a Give One Get One laptop and I have yet to receive it."

Rest assured, everyone is doing what they can to get all issues resolved as soon as possible.

[olpc-community-support] screen does not come on

Hello,

It seems that I'm not the only one who's laptop is DOA (dead on
arrival). I received my XO on the 17th of December, unpacked it and
connected it according to the recommended procedure. I inserted the
battery, connected power supply and switched it on via power button.

Result: NOTHING!! No beep, no display, no other boot activity.

Hi, I'm Richard a hardware guy at OLPC and I'm in charge of the EC
code. I just subscribed to the community-support list so I'm it bit
cold on this issue. But I'd like to help.

I've got a few things I'd like you to try.

I tried to get the XO started by resetting the EC as mention in the
troubleshooting guide several times but with no success at all.

I would like to know if there is anybody who knows about a fix for this
obviously not so rare problem. I really would like to get the little
thing working since I'm too curious about it.

Step 1 is to see if the EC is booting. Repeat the remove-all-power step
. Ie no battery and no external power. Then try 2 different variations.
1) just insert the battery
2) just hook up ext power.

In both cases I want you to watch the battery status light when you
power up the XO. When the EC boots it briefly flashes the battery light
yellow.

If that works then see if the EC is continuing to run by inserting a
battery and then plugging up external power. You should either see a
green fully charged battery light or a yellow charging indicator.

hi rich
i tried your suggestion with the following results:

1. just battery - no yellow flash when powered up and no battery light -
power light is green

2. just power - yellow flash when powered up but no screen - no battery
light - power light is green

3. both battery & power - no yellow flash, green battery light, green power
light

what does that tell you??
thanks

I tried Richard's suggestions, too. In my case, the yellow flash appeared only when inserting the power adapter connector (with the battery removed). Not when pressing the power button.

Thanks for giving some of your time to the forum, Richard. It's reassuring to know you are aware of this problem.

Eagerly anticipating the arrival of XO ...

Also tried Richard's suggestions

Hi,

I also tried Richard's suggestions.

1. just battery - no yellow flash when powered up and no battery light -power light is green
2. just power - yellow flash when I plug in the cord. No yellow flash when powered up but no screen - no battery light - power light is green
3. both battery & power - no yellow flash, green battery light, green power
light

= Same experience as dp-t.

I too want to thank all of the support we are getting; volunteers working this time of year!

to dp-t
you're right - the yellow flash is only when inserting
the power cord (with battery removed), not when pressing the power button

It's making me think you really do have a DOA unit. Can you repeat each
test several times and see if your results are repeatable? You results
only make sense if the EC is totally out of wack.

In particular, getting a green power LED on startup (without pushing the
power button) is odd, and getting a green power LED without a battery
LED flash first is _very_ odd.

Hi,

I tried the three steps again with the same result. I noticed this time that when the battery is inserted I get a yellow flash as well (but no flash during power up).

Here is my version of Richards recommended procedure:

1. When the battery is inserted a short yellow flash of the battery light is noticed, when power button is pushed the power light comes on, battery light is dark no yellow flash and no screen.

2. Exactly the same thing happens when the power cord is plugged in without the battery in place.

3. When the battery and power cord are inserted the battery indicator is lit up green, no additional yellow flash after the power button is pushed, battery indicator stays lit green as well as the power light but no screen.

I repeated these steps several times with the same result and my observation are consistent with others. The question is what to do next. It seems to me the EC does not see any power and therefore the laptop does not boot??

I'm still hoping for a solution instead to write it off as DOA.

Also a big THANK YOU to Richard since he is doing this as volunteer.

screen does not come on

Postby llc » Sat Dec 22, 2007 11:56 am

i've repeated all of the steps 3 or 4 times -
the results are consistant

1 no battery - yellow flash when plugging in cord -
after power button, only power light

2. just battery - yellow flash when inserting battery-
after power button, only power light no battery flash

3 battery+power - battery light green when power cord
is inserted - no flash after power button - both battery
and power lights are green

thanks for your help - wish there was some workaround

I'm afraid that without a serial port hookup there is nothing else we
can do. Your EC is booting and trying to turn on the laptop but thats
it. You will need to RMA the laptop. I need to get my hands on your
laptop though or otherwise somehow have it marked. I'll check with the
support people and see how to make sure its noted in the RMA.

Also a big
thank you
to Richard since he is doing this as volunteer.

I'm not a volunteer. I'm an OLPC engineer and I'm one of the (few)
people @ OLPC responsible for making sure the hardware works as
expected. So in short I'm _very_ concerned about DOA reports. Trust me
that these failures won't be overlooked.

I'm also insanely busy, so my apologies on any lag in my responses or if
I miss any mails.

Hi -

Wanted to add my results to the test as well, but they are consistent with what everyone else is seeing.

1) Battery only
no battery LED flash when booting
power LED lights after pressing power button; goes off when pressed again

2) Power only
brief battery LED flash when cord inserted
no battery LED flash when power button pressed
power LED lights after pressing power button; goes off when pressed again

3) Battery + power
battery LED lit (yellow or green)
(no additional battery LED flash when power button pressed)
power LED lights after pressing power button; goes off when pressed again

Richard (or others): Is there anything we should be doing now? I've sent off an email to the service email address, but haven't heard back. Will you be letting us know the right method/procedure for an RMA if that turns out to be the course of action?

thanks
Matt

I'm asking. But I have little to do with the support chain. The last
thing the service people need is some guy like me mucking up the works
so lets just wait and see what the service@ response is.

Its xmas weekend though so it might be a while before you get a response.

No worries. I'm out of the country now anyway.

At the end of the day though, I think we'd all appreciate a uniform system for getting an RMA and getting a replacement unit.

Same issues...

Postby ruthlesslogic » Tue Dec 25, 2007 8:56 pm

Got a DOA machine here, too.

I followed all power variations suggested and I'm getting the same results as the folks above.

Question: is this problem one of manufacturing or hardware? Or is this something that happened due to jostling during shipping? I ask because the packaging seemed fairly flimsy.

Off to email the service elves (it being Xmas and all)....

Thanks for providing this forum!
