Use of telephone modem - is this possible?

Postby celegans » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:25 pm

Hi,

I am interested in setting up an XO to use a telephone modem in a place (in India) that does not have wireless AP's around. I have a USB-modem adaptor which wold connect to the telephone (RJ45 ?) line and a dialup arangement would allow internet access. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with using such a configuration (modem<->USB adaptor<->XO) and could suggest setup instructions (or better still, a "howto"!)? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Phone plugs are usually RJ11 sized plugs.

But your topic makes me wonder... Would I be able to arrange the XO speakers and mic in a precise way to line it up with a phone's handset? ... Hmmm...

Of course, you jest, but 300 baud is all you get in some cases, and guess what? It actually works for things like text e-mail. See http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6299 for more on Radio e-mail...at 300 baud :)
