Google Chrome on XO: Love it!

Postby roystonlodge » Tue Dec 01, 2009 11:06 am

I recently installed the Google Chrome browser beta on my XO (replacing Iceweasel), and so far I love it. Zippy startup and operation, integrates well with my LXDE desktop, and so far I've had zero stability problems. I recommend it to anybody who finds Mozilla a bit slow on their XO.

I've since discovered one problem with Google Chrome - it doesn't seem to recognize that I have Java installed. The java plugin appears to be mozilla-only.

Maybe there's a workaround, but so far I have not found it.

Please tell me how to get Chrome on my G1G1 xo running build 802? I will dance at your wedding. And, yes, I have a devkey!

I'm not a Fedora expert (I installed on Debian), but as best as I can gather:

Download the 32 bit rpm at http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?platform=linux

Open the terminal activity and type sudo yum install /path/to/rpm/file

I do not guarantee that's how it works. You might want to confirm elsewhere how to install an rpm file.

Yes Google Chrome is very fast and lightweight.

On the other hand Firefox is heavy on the processor but security is better than chrome.

Do i even need to talk about IE?

What a difference a couple of years makes.

Since I originally started this thread, successive versions of Google Chrome have gotten bigger, and slower, and less stable on the XO-1.

Today, it has a larger memory footprint than Firefox, both in terms of how much storage space it requires and how much RAM it requires to run.

I find that the latest versions of Google Chrome brings my XO-1 to a crawl, and it also crashes very, very frequently.

As such, I have gone back to using Firefox.

There was an article on CNET that claimed Google is trying to reverse this trend.

My plea to Google: Release a bare-bones version of Chrome that provides users with basic browsing without unnecessary bloat. No Flash support. No Java support. No plugins support. Lightweight computer users need a browser that's a big step up from Dillo (which really doesn't cut the mustard any more, even for lightweight users) but doesn't eat up all the computer's RAM and CPU.

FYI: Another update.

I recently did two things which seem to speed Chrome up a bit:

1) I installed bleachbit and used it to clean out the cache. It had become really full. (In fact, bleachbit seems like a "must-have" app for the XO, in order to save much-needed storage space.)

2) I uninstalled google-chrome, and replaced it with chromium-browser, the open source version of the browser. I'm told that it doesn't "call home" to Google like the nonfree version does.

Your experience may vary, of course. ;-)

For what it's worth, I ran a few different browsers through the benchmarking test at http://browsermark.rightware.com.

These were the results:

Chromium : 28871
Midori : 21348
Opera : 15426
Iceweasel (firefox) : 6784
Iceape (seamonkey) : 6782
