The information about proxies is near the end of :

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Wifi_connectivity

But first, how do you know you are connected to the WEB ?

Resolve the question as to if it is a DNS issue. This is done by connecting to a website using its numerical IP address. If you need an example address, use 69.39.67.122, which is the address of one of the jabber sites. Next try to connection to one of the jabber sites ( xo1share.org is a test site that maintains one XO on line between 10 am and 10 pm EST (or EDT)). This done by using CONTROL PANEL > NETWORK and setting the "mesh server " to xo1share.org . Check the Neighborhood View to see if there are icons for other XO's.

Check out the manual in the network section -- really helpful info :

I friend of mine had the same issue the other day. Setting the mesh server did the trick for him too.
