Best Firmware/software for a B2-2 ?

Postby mendiburu » Sat Jul 18, 2009 7:16 pm

I know, the b2-2 is not supported...
But that's my XO and I love it.

I messed up a bit (installed READ, and copied a couple PDFs) and he won't boot (file system full...)
Considering a full reinstall may be the best solution, a good firmware/software refresh seem indicated. He was running (crawling...) the Q2D01(r684)-Build617

My question is: what's the firmware / software I should use, what's the procedure ?

I've searched the wiki and the forums, and I could not find the response

Thank you all for the support.

Looks like your answer is here: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO_B2 once you identify your system for sure.

Also see: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/BTest-2_Release_Notes

If you are considering doing any development or testing, do consider the Contributor's program for an updated XO, see:

B2 page seems obsolete

Postby mendiburu » Sun Jul 19, 2009 9:36 am

The B2 Page http://wiki.laptop.org/go/BTest-2_Release_Notes seems inaccurate, for many firmware pages like the Q2D1 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Firmware_q2d01 mention its compatibility with B1-4.
At some point the firmwares stop mentioning any beta compatibility.
Q2D07 and Q2D16 mention B2 compatibility.
Q2E18 mention "fixed b2 bricking".
I guess I'll try the E18
And I'll suggest updating the B2 page when I get the results.

A few questions:
1 - What if I brick my XO, what is the back-to-life process, if any ?
(including openning the XO, changing the flash memory, booting on USB ?

2 - It seems that my XO is unsecured, but I do not have a developer key yet.
If I upgrade the firmware, does it affect the secured/unsecured state ?

3 - I cannot find any compatibility information regarding software.
I assume they are all compatible, and will use 8.2.0

Thanks for you help
Thanks

I don't have specific experience with B2-2 XOs, which are long ago beta XOs.

My reading is this you should not use 8.20, but go back just to the versions of software and firmware that you had installed.

Perhaps your best avenue would be to look over archives of developers posts and make contact with other early beta users via http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Communication_channels OR contact a volunteer run repair center, see: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Directory_of_repair_centers

I'll set the firmware upgrade asside for now.
Let's just get the software up and running.
8.2 refused to boot based on a missing security.
Looks like it does not likes the unsecured state.

Let's give 7.something a chance.

Thanks

Look at:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Firmware
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Category:Firmware

This (under hardware specification) used to list which firmware could be used on the B2-2 machines, but this topic has been recently rearranged and it now freezes my XO and Windows 2000 browsers. Maybe your browser will work.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Category:Hardware

I do not have any practical experience here -- just aware of this topic that has come up several times before. ----- Good hunting.

When I updated to 8.2 it seems to have updated to FW Q2E18, and complained at boot about security and unkown word.
I down graded to the latest B2 FW, aka the Q2D16.
It then accpeted to boot and reflashed to E18, and booted linux, until X11 complained about no screen being present.
Shall I tweak the Xorg.conf ?
That's maybe a bit too far from my skill level and a big battle for small gain.

I'll downgrade the SW, and then upgrade FW and SW step by step.
I'll have to find a way to update SF w/out affecting FW.

Thanks.

I'm lucky, the release 8.1.0 is shipped with FW Q2D16
Then I'll have to figure out the XD card stuff...
