How to clone or copy a XO-1 to another?

Postby chrispero » Thu Aug 20, 2009 9:06 am

Hello all,
I am relatively new to the XO world. I am working for a action-research group in Quebec (Canada) and we got 10 XO-1. Our problem is that we are using sensors from Vernier and they are not compatible with recent libraries (see http://www.vernier.com/netbooks/olpc.html).

Only 3 XO-1 remain with the good configuration. Because libraries have changed between time, we cannot simply flash a XO-1 with the build 767 and then reinstall these packages (see the page for the list of 3). We tried it. We are stuck would like to get our 10 XO-1 to work again with these Vernier sensors in schools.

So it appears than our only solution is to clone a XO-1 (like with a ghost image) to another. I don't know if it is possible and if yes, how? I only got 24 hours because we are taking them to a Summer Institute in Europe.

Or maybe extract packagaes in their state/version on a "working" (good configuration) XO-1 and "copy" it to another?

I would really appreciate if someone could help quickly. Thanks!

For a precision, while installing the package libgnomecanvas on a fresh build 767 reinstall (a build know as stable for us), I receive this error:
dependancy is missing : libglade2 >= 2.6.2-6. But it appears that this version does not exists for Fedora 9, stuck at version 2.6.2-5 (ref: http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/s ... =libglade2)

Thank you!

The essentials are in the section on creating custom images here:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Nepal:_Technical_Details

The general steps are to remove machine specific files and use save-NAND (requires developer's key or security disabled) to USB and use copy-NAND to insall image on second XO. Rather than remove machine specific files from your model XO, you would want to copy to USB and copy back after the NAND image is saved.

This is supplied only as a general starting point. Note that it was for build 703 -- things have changed for later builds. I have no experience with this -- just pointing you to a starting point because of your urgent need. Hope you get a reply from someone with detailed experience.

As a safety measure, make a copy of the NAND (save-NAND) of the model XO before any changes are made.
