journal is full, won't delete files

Hello!
I upgraded my daughter's xo to sugar 8.2.1. Ever since, we've had problems with the journal being full. We go through and delete things, a tedious process. I've gone into terminal and deleted the old version of the OS. Still we seem to only have 33MB free, and now the journal is full prompt comes up when nearly any activity is opened. Do i have to re-install, using a USB stick (last time i downloaded from the internet)? i presume i should first put any photos or files that i want to keep on the stick in a separate file to preserve them. I thought the journal was supposed to automatically delete things as it approached full? Any help at all much appreciated!

Journal does not automatically delete files.

Save anything you do not want to lose to a USB stick (separate stick from download).

Do a clean install using a USB stick (thumb flash drive) per:
