updating firmware - no ok prompt

Postby ugandaXO » Sun Nov 25, 2012 7:33 am

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware - I am at Q2D07 to the current q2f13 per
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Firmware_q2f13

However, I have tried all the ways to reach the ok prompt per instructions here with no success.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Ok

I hold the check game pad key and get the Release Game Key to Continue message.
I hold down the X excape key before releasing the check game pad key as directed but all that happens is that the grey "splash" screen disappears and I see all the commands of the system starting. Eventually, it boots completely to the main screen.

I'm trying to update the firmware before updating from release 656 to the current release.

Any help will be appreciated. These units have been sitting in a closet and were recently given to me. I'm in Uganda wanting to share these with some kindergarten school kids.

I suspect your XO is "activated" and the release notes do not apply.

If your XO is not "activated" (from charity group) then follow the instructions in the release notes for USB reinstall -- this will update the firmware after the software is installed. All notes are in :
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Releases. You cannot go directly from 656 to 12.1.0. You must first go to 11.3.0 or 11.3.1 .

Do not attempt this if you cannot get the "activation key" back from a USB drive or SchoolServer.

Look here for a discussion of "activation" and security features:
