embarrassed windows user, hopelessly lost

Postby thezef » Sat Nov 15, 2008 8:52 am

hi. i have used a dell computer for some years, (with a telephone modem) and thought i could surf the web well and do "things" with my computer (roxio dvd movies, making songs, etc.) i bought the olpc, i can play the little child games, but i can't do anything else: i can't BEGIN to connect to the internet, even when i think i have a "mesh" connection (even the pre-loaded applications for newssites etc all say cannot load page), and i can't understand the "upgrade" instructions, no matter how far back i try to dig (even finding "what version do I have" and typing in the basic commands into terminal
i'm not dumn, but i can't find REAL REAL BEGINNER help at all: is this all typically considered to be only for "Linux users", whatever that entails? not to generalize, but are we windows home users considered as a different (read uninitiated) class of consumer who is not expected to "program" and enter special commands? (or is it just me?)
how can a real real beginner start this? :|

Here is a place to start: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Getting_started

which includes this link http://www.laptop.org/manual/

and you should update your XO to 8.2 see: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Upgrading_the_XO
