Changing default settings for an XO deployment

Postby markreed » Thu Apr 02, 2009 9:16 am

I've been trying to find a way to set a number of defaults for a deployment at a school in NT, Australia. We have about 200 machines we need to deploy to primary students and I'd like to make the initial experiance they have as consistent and easy as possible.

Set the default Favorite Activities
Edit the file .sugar/default/favorite_activities
Add (or Remove) a line for each of the Activities that you want to appear on the Favorites view

Turn off hot corners for the Frame
Edit the file .sugar/default/config
Change the [Frame] section for hotcorners and warmedges to 1000.

Set the correct timezone
Edit the file .sugar/default/config
Change the [Date] section for timezone to your correct locale.
for example:
Code: Select all
timezone = Australia/Darwin

Change the Browse activity default screen
Edit the file .library_pages/index.html
For example we are not using a school server so we removed that link and added a link to a local Moodle server the school has.

BTW, these folders (.sugar and .library_pages) are in the folder /home/olpc/
You might need to login as SU if you are making the edits on the XO.

awesome tips. without the frame, how do they switch between activities? i know there's alt+tab, maybe you know another one?
teachers that continue teaching should be expected to continue learning; it's an absurdity to have 19th century expectations of 21st century educators. granted they shouldn't have their time wasted (more than students,) or be paid insulting salary.
