Pls Help figuring out laptop.

Postby sharaz » Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:35 am

Hi,
I have been on the Internet for 13 years and am considered pretty savvy. I have never programmed anything except some light HTML, but for the life of me I cannot figure this laptop out. I want to give it to my 6 yr old daughter, but if I can't figure it out, how can I expect her to? I can't understand how to do any activities. Browsing anything that has anything more than plain HTML is impossible (no playhousedisney for her!).

I can get online, but nothing seems to work the way it should.

I'm getting really frustrated. It's been sitting in our house for 6 months and my husband is really annoyed at me for having gotten it. Please help!!

Thanks!
sharaz

It sounds like you're expecting it to work like your other computers, when clearly it is different. It's possible your daughter will arrive at different destinations, and learn different things from it than she would from an Internet connected PC. You don't have to figure it out, you just have to let her do it, and if she gets frustrated you can try downloading different activities to it. If she's expecting Internet flash files to work, perhaps she should use your computer?

I'm not trying to sound confrontational. It's just an alternate way of looking at your problem... it's not a problem, it's a feature. There wasn't any WWW when I was learning computers from the command line and ROM packs (essentially Activities)

The "Browse" activity is designed for surfing pretty plain HTML.

You might want to try installing Firefox: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Firefox2 - fairly painless, and it's what I use a lot of the time. If you've never run the Terminal activity before, it's the rectangular icon with a dollar-sign (prompt) inside.

You might want to "sugarize" it (make it have an icon in the sugar environment) http://www.catmoran.com/olpc/#sugxterm but that's a little more complicated. (I haven't done that yet, myself.)

And as saskboy pointed out -- the XO was designed for children, not adults. It's not a normal computer -- it's a learning and discovery tool. Trust your daughter -- she might be more capable than you think!

I'm having a problem installing Firefox on my XO - I followed your advice and using the terminal entered the following ...
Code: Select all
bash-3.2# sudo yum install http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Firefox2

After going through the various tasks and trying to set up the install process my XO told me ...

Code: Select all
No package http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Firefox2 available

What am I doing that is wrong?

As you can guess I'm very much a beginner in all this - BUT I want to learn if anyone can help me. Thanks
