please help

Postby ludite » Mon Feb 02, 2009 6:58 pm

I have had this unit for some time and only used it for email and surfing.
I have no experience with computers, but want to use this unit to learn with.
I do not know which product it is, and when I download the manual, I am directed to go to home.
The only options to click on are Reboot, Shutdown and Register.
When I begin to follow instructions for finding out which model I have, I see warnings that I think warn me that if I do not know what I am doing, I should not go there
please let me know where I can get help, so that I can start to learn to use this thing

Thanks
ludite

The manual applies to the new version of the software (version 8.2.0, aka build 767, October 2008).
You have the original version of software ( version ship2, aka build 650, late 2007).

Do upgrade to the newest software.

This is very easy if you have access to a PC (or Mac) with a USB flash (thumb)drive and connected to the internet. Just two clicks on two links to download two files (1/2 hour). Then put the USB drive into the XO and power On while holding down all four game keys (under right speaker).

See:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/No-Fail_Upgrade

or:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Release_notes/8.2.0 section with XO not connected to internet.

If you have done as ncarrol says then fine. If not, you can find the manual by going to the wiki here

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/The_OLPC_Wiki

on the left frame click on support for the xo
This will take you to a page that has links to older information.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Getting_started

the newest manual is here
http://laptop.org/8.2.0/manual/ I managed to use it for the not quite newest version pretty well.

good luck,

jeanna
