Let's see what happens when you try to operate with just the AC power.
Turn off AC power and remove the battery.
Look for the brief amber flash of the battery light as you turn on (plug in) AC module -- this means the embedded controller is working.
Power on and look for the very brief, one time, flash of the microphone light (above left speaker) immediately after the power on. This means that the firmware is running.
If no display and this is an original XO (no software updates), then suspect the Real Time Clock battery problem. This will require repair by (or a loan of a serial adapter from) one of the repair centers.
