16 GB SD card (okay, SDHC really)

Postby djsdl at frombob.to » Mon Dec 24, 2007 12:00 am

I stuck a 16GB SD card into my XO.

It works.

I went to Project Gutenberg and downloaded a PDF of 'Pride and
Prejudice'. Been wanting to re-read that for a while.

Opened up the Journal, dragged that entry onto the SD card icon at the
bottom.

Then opened a terminal and cd'ed into /media, found the mounted SD card
volume, looked inside, found the PDF file.

df -h told me how much space was left on the card. It appears I only
have room for 20,000 more books.

No doubt the 64GB cards will be out in 1.5 years.

OK ... it works ... where did you get it? I've only found 8 GB ones on line.

_Pride and Prejudice_ isn't all that big ... try some of the 600+ page
programming books. :)

As will, no doubt, a version of the XO with more power for older
children who will have outgrown a GB of flash and 256 MB of RAM. :)

I have found three 16GB models so far.

The one I got is made by A-DATA. I found it here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820211245

Zounds! the price has dropped $15 since I ordered it...

That book has no pictures, and compresses well. But even if the average
size of the books that interest you is ten times larger, this card still
has room for thousands. Certainly more books than I will have time to
read in the next 1.5 years. And by then I will take this card out and
replace it with one that holds four times more.

All I need now is my yoyo charger and my rollup solar panel and a few
spare batteries. Once I have those, I'll never again have to worry that
I might suddenly become marooned on a tropical island and die of boredom.

Well ... I have some Shostakovich and Hovhaness "ogg" files too. :)

I can see that my OLPC is going to be very handy for reading PDF data books and manuals at my workbench. This is great.

Is there some way to zoom in the PDF reader? I figured out most of the game keys for moving through the file (with the display rotated into ebook mode) but couldn't find a zoom.

Get an account on the bug tracker at http://dev.laptop.org look through
the feature requests and if its not there then file one. I think we
have talked about such a feature.

Yes, 16GB cards work

Postby Visual Echo » Fri Dec 28, 2007 7:46 pm

I got an A-Data 16GB SDHC (Class6) chip from NewEgg for just under $100 with shipping, and it mounted right up.

Code: Select all
bash-3.2# df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
mtd0                  1.0G  598M  427M  59% /
tmpfs                  35M     0   35M   0% /dev/shm
/dev/mmcblk0p1         15G  288K   15G   1% /media/4BFB-4488

Hi,

Check the toolbar in the Read activity. I believe you can set the zoom factor up there, at least. I know some of the gamepad buttons work for scrolling, and that better navigation in "ebook mode" is planned.

The XO is a great eBook reader already :D
Thanks,

Newegg is now selling the A-Data Tubro 16GB, class 6 SDHC card for $29.

Newegg also has a couple of 32GB SDHC cards for $128 and $176, but they're class 4 cards (class 6 = 6MB/s write speed, class 4 = 4 MB/s)

Forgive me, but I've lost track of SD and SDHC compatibility. Does the XO read both SD and SDHC?

And if it reads plain SD, can it see an entire (relatively rare, or was) 4gb SD card?

Is there any limit to the number of directories, or number of files, which it can see, in general? I have a couple MP3 players which do have restrictions. One, the VAMP 425 sees my 4gb card as 2gb, which is not a terrible problem.

Thank yoU!

I've got a 16GB A-data SDHC card and it sees the entire thing.

The slot can see SD/SDHC cards just fine. There is no limit to the directory depth other than the one imposed by whatever file system you format it with.

I am personally having problems with my Transcend 8gb SDHC (TS8GSDHC6) that when I write too much too fast to it, it gets I/O errors. I don't know if it's just my card because I'm also having trouble with it in card readers on desktop systems.
