moving files to USB

Talk about how to use and get the most out of Activities for the XO.

moving files to USB

Postby hey2you » Fri Oct 03, 2008 2:26 am

I tried what the wiki said at http://wiki.laptop.org/go/USB_drive , but I don't see a red icon either in my journal or on the home page. I really want to move my pictures from the xo to the USB since during my last session some pictures just disappeared from the xo.

I was able to get 1 picture from the ox onto the USB by:

Entering Journal
Click to open the picture
Under “Copy to clipboard”, there was the name of my USB device
Clicked that and it saved

BUT

I tried that now but my USB device does not show up.

Please help

Hi

Try unplugging your usb then plugging it in again. It should show up in journal, at the bottom of the screen (you may need to wait about ten seconds.) If not, try rebooting, and if that doesn't work, try formatting your usb stick on a pc before trying again (making sure to save anything on your usb stick first.)

I've never had problems with either of my usb sticks, but I've read that some brands don't work on the xo as well as other brands.

Moving/renaming/deleting files is a lot easier if you install xfce (try googling it). It makes the xo much easier to use for people who are used to a windows based computer.

Thanks blinky .

I'll try what you suggested and see what happens.

It's my understanding that you need to do these steps BEFORE pulling your USB stick out of your XO, to keep them playing nicely together in the future:
Go to Journal
Right-click on the USB stick icon
Select "unmount"

Of course, if it isn't showing up in Journal, you may as well pull it out anyway.
