Printing from Gnome

I have tried to print from Abiword with the Gnome interface. The Hp P1006 is connected directly to my XO on one of the USB ports. Abiword recognzes my printer but when I try to print, nothing happens, no error messages or anything. I went to the CUPS administrator and it recognizes my printer on the USB port and I used the CUPS maintenace program to try to print a test page. CUPS said that the test was sucessful even though the printer did nothing. I am totally baffled, I know the printer works using a USB connecttion. Any thoughts!!!

An old reference is:

where the authorization is the problem -- gave the same symptoms that you are seeing.

My XO is out on loan. If it comes back soon, I will see what it takes to print.

To clarify the above post, setting a password for root before running CUPS administration is probably the step needed but missed.

Alternatively, removing the "required users" for a USB printer is not a security issue as with a network printer.
