yum install/update: Insufficient space

Postby star5 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 1:44 pm

just installed 10.1.2 and really like the gnome desktop.
but now i'm stuck.

i tried sudo yum update it started to download some packages but now stopped saying:
Insufficient space in download directory /var/cache/yum/olpc-fedora-updates/packages

what is the problem?

df -h says there are still 400MB available?!

I've also tried adding swap. No difference...

There is a very good thread on this:

There is just not enough memory for Yum update. Use USB drive for cache or switch to single user and make cache in Nand memory as described in thread.

To work around this issue I used:

sudo mount /var/cache/yum -o size=400m,remount

Which will increase the size of the the tmpfs. The given size (400MB) here might need adjustments depending on how large the stuff is one wants to install. Having swap space might be required when the tmpfs goes beyond the size of RAM.

I put script before running yum to make sure that I have enough space. This script will also send me and email in case there is not enough space, from my condition, then I know that I need to do some thing if I want to get update.
